Archaic Darkness

First the forest breathed its roots along the floor,
then they built the houses and the roads;
earth and sky met less and less.
Finally the civil growth was perfect,
and a gray mold of buildings covered all.
Beneath the streets, gods that had walked the woods
glowered in the archaic darkness.
