I Stepped Into Death's Anteroom

I stepped into Death's anteroom,
   there was neither voice nor sound,
the curtained light was bright and still,
   the day went on and on.

Fear and sorrow sat beside,
   but quiet, polite and dim;
we did not steal our friend's long gaze
   or interrupt her dream.
